Samuel Greer
Smith Jr.
Oct 30, 1924 — Sep 16, 2021
Sam Greer Smith, Jr., 96, passed from this world on September 16, 2021. He was born in San Antonio on October 30, 1924, to Samuel Greer Smith and Marguerite (Simon) Smith. Sam was a World War II Veteran, having served as a seaman in the United States Merchant Marines (USMM) over 30 years, beginning in 1944. After WW II, he briefly left the Merchant Marines and was in commercial fishing for about five years, then returned to the Merchant Marines as a top-rated radio operator, a valuable position on any ship. He traveled the world, and had lifelong friends in many places. He loved life, and all his family and friends with whom he had genuine relationships.
Although he had no children of his own, he treated his many cousins of several generations and children and grandchildren of close family friends as his own. He did not miss a birthday, graduation, or wedding. He made friends everywhere he went. The staff at Sea Island, Culver's, the bank, and many businesses knew him by name. They will remember his signature WW II Veteran's cap that he wore proudly.
Sam got by just fine without a computer or smartphone. He would share his research on family geneology or healthy living in multiple copies for everyone that might be interested. Sam wore out the stairs at Wonderland Mall where he walked daily until age 90, when he also wore out his hip. Although he steadied himself with a walker, he kept driving until age 95, when he gave up his car. He then made new friends at Waterford on Huebner. Sam was not only friendly, but also generous in many ways. He loved to tell of his adventures, and shared every detail. We treasure the time we had with Sam, and although it never seems long enough, we are thankful for the time we did have. We were truly blessed. Rest in peace, dear Sam, until we meet again.
Rosary followed by Funeral Mass will begin Friday, October 15 at 10:30 at Blessed Sacrament Church, 600 Oblate Drive. Bishop Michael Pfeifer, a cousin, will officiate.
