Obituary

Rosemary Reyna officially declared that she was done putting up with the world's nonsense and passed away peacefully on May 23, 2025. After a long run of doing things her way, passionately defending what she believed in, and battling Alzheimer's with her characteristic stubbornness, she's now officially off duty.

On December 7th, 1952 (a date which will live in infamy for two reasons), Rosemary was born in Castroville, TX to Albert and Aurora (Duron) Becerra.  She grew up in LaCoste, TX, surrounded by an extended family of cousins, tíos, and grandparents.  Under the watchful eyes of her parents, her aunts, and the nuns, Rosemary grew up smart and tough. While rural Texas may have been insulated from the worst of the political and social turmoil of the '50s and '60s, it wasn't always the picture of perfect, pastoral life for our adventurous and inquisitive Rosemary.  Identifying more with the superheroes (and prizefighters, some may think) of her day, Rosemary wanted to make a difference in the world.  She graduated from Medina Valley High School in 1970 and set her eyes on the great big world beyond the borders of her hometown.

Always a small-town girl with a taste for the big city, Rosemary made her way to San Antonio in 1970 to study English at St. Mary's University. But her plans took a turn when trouble showed up—trouble, as it turned out, was named Robert Reyna. After a whirlwind romance, Rosemary married Robert on October 7th, 1972.  For over 50 years, they fought toe-to-toe, or side-by-side as the occasion necessitated. Together, they raised four smart, funny, and strong-willed children. She didn't always agree with her kids or their choices, but if they all grew up fiercely independent and stubborn, it's kind of her own fault, they learned from the best.  She also directly and indirectly impacted the lives of hundreds or thousands more children, whether it was through her work at Child Protective Services, her willingness to break out her wallet for any child in need that crossed her path, or her diligent patronage of dozens of local restaurants wherever she called home.

While Rosemary wasn't exactly Julia Child in the kitchen, she made a beautiful home in the many cities they found themselves in over the years. She was fiercely protective of her friends and family. Her side-eye was legendary, and if any of her children growl, they learned it from her.  She could win arguments without saying a word, and somehow still manage to make you feel cared for—usually through sarcasm, or by reminding you that "you're so annoying, but I love you."

In the later years, Alzheimer's did its best to confuse her, but it never stole her spark—or her ability to call B.S. Sure, she forgot a lot, but she remembered how to keep us on our toes. Every visit came with a new twist in the "guess what year it is" game, and every goodbye came with the same old smirk.

She is survived by her four kids, Jennifer (Pedro), Jacqueline, Robert (Violeta), and Chris.  She also leaves behind her grandchildren Makayla, Julien, Tigerlily, Tiegan, Ziva, Tomás, Emilio, Evelyn, Robert III, Luna, Elio, and Mariano, sisters Lydia and Gloria, and brother Stephen, her spoiled rescue dog Elton who misses the KFC she would sneak him under the table, and several lifelong friends.  Rosemary was preceded in death by her husband Robert, mother Aurora, father Albert, brother Robert, sister Betsy, and daughter Jordan.

Rosemary, you were one of a kind. Thanks for the chaos, the comedy, and the unfiltered honesty.  We hope heaven has the latest copy of People, that you can get all the chisme directly from the British Royals that have gone before, and that the powers that be keep things at a comfy 65 degrees at all times.  Everyone else can grab a throw blanket.

The family would like to offer our heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Brookdale Hamilton Senior Living Center in San Antonio. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Alzheimer's research, your charity of choice, or your local Democratic party campaigns.

Good luck Robert, Lucy's home!
