Mary Anne
Freudendorf Kramer
Jul 17, 1941 — Sep 21, 2023
San Antonio
Mary Anne Kramer passed from this world on Thursday September 21, 2023 in San Antonio, TX. She was born in Carmel, CA on July 17, 1941 and was the oldest daughter of Col. Chester Freudendorf and Mary Edith Freudendorf. Mary Anne and her two sisters' formative years were spent moving between Army assignments and included numerous locations but her time in Puerto Rico and Japan were her favorites and inspired her love of cultures, history and exploration. She attended and graduated from University of North Carolina Greensboro in 1963 and while there became involved in the voting rights and social justice movements occurring at that time. After graduation, she moved to New York City to start her professional career as an educator.
In New York she met her future husband of 55 years Roger Kramer and as he was an officer in the US Air Force continued her life of constant travel and spent time in Colorado, California, Illinois, Nevada and Texas.
Mary Anne was a loving mother and "minded the homefront" raising their daughter Lara, and their son Alan, while Roger was frequently overseas or on assignments. Her creativity and passion for education inspired the experiences she shared with her kids and involved arts, crafts, music and love. Many a trip was made to appreciate nature's beauty and involved a museum visit and stop at every historical marker along the way. While staying at home, she was active in leading women's political groups during the 1980's presidential elections, and worked side by side with her husband on a variety of entrepreneurial projects over the years.
When Roger retired from the Air Force they decided to stay in San Antonio and she went back into the classroom full-time and made life-long friends as a 6th grade social studies teacher at Coke R. Stevenson Middle School. She always believed in the value of learning through experience, always supported her children as they threw themselves into numerous adventures and extended her love of learning to others by inviting exchange students, Tim and Marie Claude to become part of the family. After her retirement from education she had more time to volunteer at the San Antonio Symphony, serve on the Braun Station Homeowners' Association Board of Directors and re-engage with the League of Women Voters.
She spent her later years reading literally thousands of books, watching her beloved NCAA basketball, completing cross-stitch projects, traveling across the globe on 5 continents and over 50 countries, exploring archaeology sites around North America and living vicariously through the passions of her four grandkids.
Mary Anne will be remembered by her doting husband Roger Kramer, her daughter Lara Pagel, her son Alan Kramer and his wife Angela Kramer, extended children Tim Friedrich of Germany and Marie Claude Parenteau-Lebeuf of Quebec, her four grandchildren Jenna and Kyle Pagel and Warren and Lauren Kramer, her two sisters, Edith Smith and Carol Giusto, her brother in law Dr. Fred Kramer, seven nieces and nephews, and the hundreds of students, friends and colleagues she touched throughout her life. Her passionate opinions, intellectual curiosity and willful approach to life will not be forgotten, We hope she has found peace with her creator and inspiration for the next leg of her journey.
A celebration of life will be held at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Antonio (7150 IH-10 W, San Antonio, TX 78213) on Saturday September 30th at 4:30 pm.
