Obituary

Ernest Longoria Villarreal, a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and decorated veteran, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2025, at the age of 78. Born on July 28, 1946, in Taft, Texas, he was the son of Joaquin Villarreal and Angelita Longoria and stepson of Emerick Bartkoviak, whose presence helped shape the man he became.

Ernest graduated from the hard knocks school of Harlandale High School in San Antonio, Texas, before enlisting in the United States Army.  He served valiantly in the military for twenty-two years, including combat duty during the Vietnam War. His bravery and dedication earned him the Silver Star and Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars for courage and valor, a testament to his unwavering commitment to his fellow soldiers and his country.  He trained as a Military Police Officer and Chef, managing the Officers' Quarters, where he took great pride in his work and served countless soldiers.  Following his distinguished military career as Sargent First Class, he continued his dedication as a civil servant at the Submarine Base in Groton, Connecticut before relocating to Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, where he worked as a Maintenance Mechanic until his well-earned retirement.

In 1968, Ernest married the love of his life, Maria A. Villarreal (1950-2021), and together for the next five decades they built a beautiful life rooted in love, family, and devotion.  He often mentioned her guidance and support was the sole reason for his successful career and unconditionally loved her, he married her twice.   When her health was at risk due to diabetes, he willingly gave a kidney, a testament to their deep bond and devotion to one another.

They raised three wonderful children:  Ernie Villarreal (1969-2022), Patricia Villarreal Harris, and Angie Longoria Villarreal, all who will forever value his wisdom, kindness, strength and cherish exposing us to the world living abroad in Europe representing the Armed Service.

Ernest found fantastic joy in his grandchildren watching them grow, sharing countless summertime traditions including tubing down the Guadelupe River, visiting historical museums, amusement parks or his old stomping grounds.  He was always their biggest supporter, offering love and encouragement at every turn.  Immensely proud of his granddaughter, Alexis Harris (aka Grandma's favorite) independence and the unwavering bond shared with his wife.  He fostered a distinguished relationship with his grandsons Ayden Percel Longoria-Harris and Andrew Ernest Harris never referring to them as twins because he was aware and cherished their individuality.

He leaves his "Number One" Son-in-Law, Edward B. Harris which he shared his love of sports even offering support to his football team when his own team did not make the playoffs although wavering mid game.

Beyond his exceptional service and professional accomplishments, Ernest was a man who loved to laugh, tell stories, and make friends wherever he went. He had an infectious spirit, a gift for storytelling, and a way of making people feel welcome. Whether it was sharing a funny memory, cracking a joke, or simply listening with a kind heart, Ernest brought warmth and joy to those around him. His ability to turn strangers into friends was one of his greatest qualities.  Ernest left an indelible mark on the lives of those around him. His legacy will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Ernest also leaves two sons: Ernest Longoria Villarreal Jr. and Ricardo Villarreal, his aunt Valentina Salazar, daughter-in law, Hajra Masic, best friend Leo Garcia and many more family and friends.

He was the beloved grandson of Richard and Dominga Contreras Longoria.  He was preceded in death by his brothers, Joaquin Villarreal, Jr. and Adam Garcia.  In addition, to his aunts and uncles Bertha Clemmons, Refugio Longoria, Enrique Longoria, Elva Rodriguez, and Richard Longoria, all of whom were cherished members of his family and influenced his life in countless ways.

He says goodbye to Cookie, his emotional support Chihuahua who enjoyed riding on the scooter to run errands, pausing to say hello to friends and neighbors.

Rest in peace, Dad. Your duty is done, your legacy endures, and your laughter will echo in our hearts forever, from your loving daughters.
